I brought this application to the notice of Sir F. D. Lugard just before his departure and he wrote that he had the highest opinion of Commander Beckwith, but that he much regretted that he was unable to make a recommendation at the last moment before leaving. I understand that this opinion is shared by those who are acquainted with Commander Beckwith's work, and I think it right, therefore, to bring the matter to your notice with my recommendation.
